Traditional memorial services are not for everyone. If you are looking for creative ideas to honor the life of a loved one, where do you look for ideas? We have lots of them here at Santa Rosa Memorial Park and we know how direct you towards others.
For example, you can have your own Burning Man style celebration of life. The basic premise is based upon the Burning Man multi-day festival that is held each year in the Nevada desert. Like that event, you and your loved ones can – where legally allowed – create a flammable art piece around which you can gather, share memories and enjoy refreshments.
Such an outdoor gathering of family and friends can take place at the graveside, a beach, park or desert location immediately following interment or inurnment. It can also take place weeks, even months after the remains have been properly taken care of.
You can also think about creating individual art pieces that will go home with those who attend. Sand paintings at the beach require water color paper (or canvas), watercolors, crayons or colored pencils, and glue for the sands. Some people choose to recite poetry or record themselves recounting beloved shared moments with the deceased. You can also sing and dance together. In some instances, the written material can be compiled into a book (via digital word document). This can provide an affordable yet very personal collection that can easily be emailed to all.
Whatever you decide to do, be sure to find out what permits if any are necessary. If you want to hold a special celebration graveside or before a niche or columbarium, let your cemetery manager know. They will guide you as to what is doable within the law.
